In Octoberthat, we announced that passkeys were now supported in the new version of Chapter. This is a great Step forward for passkey Manager because it's easier to use than using a password and also safer than using other phishing tools. passkey managers work across all major operating systems and can be trusted by both Mac and Windows. you can sign in with your passkey on any device you like. On an Android or Mac device, you can choose to use one of these passkey management tools. when signing into a site with a valid passkey, you don't need to remember a second key; Only a code is sent back to the site so there's no risk of being leaked. now, even though they're not yet complete, they'll continue to work on making them more secure.
We're pleased to announce that passkey support is now available in Chrome Stable M108. passkeys are a significantly safer replacement for passwords and other phishable authentication factors. they can be used with both websites and apps that support them.
The narrator takes us to the tiny country of Monaco, which is described as "a sunny place with shadiness people." It's home to several millionaires and has an attractive lifestyle. Di Giovanni says that she finds life easier once she leaves university and feels very happy in the country now. There are plenty of wealthy people living in the principal city, but it's still too small for them to be comfortable walking around without makeup on. prices are skyrocketing because of the high population. People can buy or rent a property there and keep at least 5,000 euros in a bank register. They have to apply for their citizenship after they have lived in the main city for at least 10 years. De Gaspari tells everyone that even if they were married to Count Monagaseque, they would not be allowed to live in the nation anymore. Even so, the government does make some money by making sure that all the citizens who move to the country get decent housing and work. Everyone agrees that having a family in the big city makes you feel more connected to the world.
Monaco is one of the smallest and wealthiest countries in the world, with a population of 38,000. seven in 10 of those people are millionaires, with at least 199 holding assets of $30 million. Monaco is home to 139 nationalities, and has a low income tax and wealth tax regime.
The Bumblebee team is proud to announce that they have released several new Machine learning models for use with Elixir. These include GPT2 , Stable Diffusion, and more. All of these new features are thanks to the efforts of many different people, including Josvalim, Jonatan K osko, Sean Moriarity and Paulo Valente. We also look forward to working on training and transferring learning of Machine Learning in Elixir.
A variety of Neural Networks models are now available to the Elixir community via the Bumblebee project. you can download training parameters for said models directly fromHugging Face.
Livebook can be used to run Machine learning models. Here are some examples of what it looks like to useLivebook to run a Machine learning model.
You should be able to embed and serve these models as part of your existing Phoenix web applications, integrate them into pipelines with Broadway, and deploy them alongside Nerves embedded systems - without needing 3rd-party dependencies.
Integration with Hugging Face Bumblebee allows you to download and use trained models directly. a high-level function designed for the text generation task, that's it!
Neural Networks can be compiled to the CPU/GPU, thanks to projects such asEXLA and Torchx.
This release is a huge milestone in our Numerical Elixir effort, which started almost two years ago. we are also thankful to Hugging Face for enabling collaborative Machine Learning across communities and tools. Next, we plan to focus on training and transfer learning of Neural Networks in.
We have written single-file Phoenix applicationsas examples of Bumblebee models inside Phoenix (+ LiveView) apps. for a more hands-on approach, read some of ournotebooks.
The author explains how he's been working on building an amiga 500+ replacement. He's tired of the lack of RAM and wants to build an FPU that can do everything. He also needs some slow memory so he can use his old Amiga 500 board as an emulator. The only problem is that the instructions for the jumper assembly don't seem to work. so he decides to build it himself.
I'm half way through building an Amiga 500+ replica. the board wasn't well documented for assembly, until I looked. here's it assembled.
The company plans to combine its efforts on the Waze and Waze product lines into one group, a move that will further cement its position in the search giant.
Search giant faces pressure to streamline operations and cut costs. team overseeing map service will work with group overseeing Maps product. search giant plans to combine team working on Waze with Maps team.
The author explains how he came to be involved in the open-source community and how his early efforts helped him become a part of it. he also describes some of the problems that faced the company when he first started working on the product. One of the biggest challenges was that they didn't have enough engineers to build the right features for the new version of the product; other problems were related to issues that would later arise after the release. For example, one of their most important features was to burn down the last bug you could and throw everything overboard as the launch date approached. This gave them an additional month to fix all those last minute details bugs that you usually wouldn't want to have time for but instead just let them polish the thing. The only problem is that they couldn't even use even Google hardware because it was so custom. They had to rent servers outside of the company's own network to do this. Jim notes that Git has been used for code reviews since the day of the launch. When they finally released, however, they found out that there weren't many people at the company who worked on the project. also, they needed to approve changes before they went to market. It wasn't easy for them to get approval from experienced engineers, which was one of the reasons why they wanted to make sure everyone knew what they were doing. Finally, they got a reward for making great work. After several years, though, they decided to give more rewards to projects that were better than others. Web apps vs. native. We took for granted today we can build real applications on the web...but here's another story: At the time we tried to launch Chrome, we had no Home button. I remember writing native "UI code" to do our personal custom text layout." From my experience onthat project I later done some ofthe work in Chrome to expose HTML/based browser UI and I remember advocated for it within team. Since now a lotof the stuff in the current Chrome is implemented in Htmo's built-in console. now, with the help of Darin, whom he previously worked on, they are able to create a fast, tight, and secure page.
Bruce schneier: it's been 10 years since he worked on a web browser. he says he was a nerd, but he's still proud of what he did, and how he hasn't forgotten anything.
The UM uses ChatGPT to demonstrate how it can decipher the rot13 word using a simple cipher called Caesar. the UM feels that ChatGPT is trying to apply "Syllable 1 thinking" to a task that requires "Seriously Recognizing words" and then "filling in the gap from there." He wonders whether these tasks require more of a "System 2 thinking" than those that it does not.
ChatGPT is attempting to apply System 1 thinking to a problem that requires a System 2 approach. in this case, it feels like it's approaching the problem like a language learner put on spot. many of the tasks it is good at are things that humans use System 2 thinking to do.
The following problems were selected randomly. They all passed all test cases and we have not yet found a solution that is correct but inefficiency. If you'd like to read more, Check out our paper and post for more.
Solutions were selected randomly, keeping at most one correct (passes all test cases in our dataset) and one incorrect sample per problem and language. since our dataset only has a limited number of test cases, we have cannot completely rule out false positives.
We get a brief look at the new cooling technology being developed by Frore Systems. it's called "the AirJet" and it uses piezo electric crystals to cool large, bulky devices like cell phones and even small, thin-to-fittable devices. The company plans to release two more of its coolers in the next few months.
Frore systems is developing a new contender in the active chip cooling market. Traditional mechanical solutions such as fans or heat pipes transport heat. efficient cooling challenging for compact designs such as laptops or tablets.
The AirJet will revolutionize the chip cooling industry by making thermal management solutions thinner. the company has attracted the attention of two of the biggest names in high-performance computing:Intel and Qualcomm.
As processors become faster and more densely integrated, more power is lost to heat. if no cooling is provided, the chip's temperature can quickly rise. an unchecked processor can quickly damage itself under heavy loads.
The AirJet is a new method for active chip cooling. it uses piezoelectric crystals to push cool air over the chip.
Despite the "solid-state" claim, these coolers do have moving parts. the AirJet Mini and AirJet Pro are described as the first solid-state thermal solution.
The AirJet can cool the chip in an unbelievably small form factor. the Mini and Pro have a total height of only 2.8 mm with a max weight of 22 g.
The project is still in its youth, but Frore has already received support from both Qualcomm and Intel. Interested parties can keep an eye out for future Intel Evo systems that include AirJet cooling.

A few days earlier, Multiple foreign news outlets released a short clip that shows a midair crash between a Bell B-17 and a Boeing P-63 during the Wings over Dallas Air Show at the Dallas Air show. The two aircraft collided in an Air fight, killing all five seated on the B-17 while the pilot of one of the plane's engines went down in flames
A video appears to show a foreign object hitting the Bell P-63 Kingcobra. the crash killed all six occupants of a Boeing 777 and the pilot of the 63rd plane. if authentic, both videos offer a look at the last moments before the crash.
The narrator recounts the story of fourteen-year old Dean Ripa, who was injured by a cotton mouth snake bite. He had been collecting snakes in his spare room for two weeks and then began breeding them to make extra money to purchase snakes from other people. after this incident, he opened the Carolina Fear Serpentarium, a gallery with over a hundred snakes on display. It is described as "one of the largest collection of live exotic serpents in the United States." His father has forgiven him for his early age. In addition to his extensive collection of snakes, Dean also breeds bushmasters and sells them to scientists. At one point, when he sees a box turtle cross the road, if unable to kill it safely, she rushes off to retrieve it herself.
Cnn's John defterios visits a zoo in North Carolina, where he has a collection of snakes. he's the first person to breed a snake in captivity, and he says he doesn't have a religion. "I don't know if I'm a hermit or not," he tells the audience. the show is a tribute to a man who died in a car crash
The narrator introduces the new open-source, high-efficiency, Python-compiler, called "Codon" and describes its features. it's not just a replacement for Python; it can also be used as a full-blown Python compiler.
Codon is a high-performance Python compiler that compiles Python code to native machine code. Codon's performance is typically on par with (and sometimes better than) that of C/C++. Unlike Python, Codon supports native multithreading, which can lead to speedups.
Download and install Pre-built binaries for Linux (x86_64) and macOS. Download and install with:/bin/bash -c.
Examples Codon is a Python-compatible language, and many Python programs will work with few if any modifications. the compiler has a number of options and modes: a, b=0, 1 while a n: print(a, end=' ') b, a+b print(1000)
Compile and run the program codon run fib.py. if you haven't already, compile the program and run it.
Compile and run the program with optimizations enabled codon run -release fib.py. compile the program and run it with.
Compile to executable with optimizations enabled codon build -release -exe fib.py./fib.
Compile to LLVM IR file with optimizations enabled codon build -release -llvm fib.py.
This prime counting example showcases Codon'sOpenMPsupport, enabled with the addition of one line. it tells the compiler to parallelize the following-loop using a dynamic schedule, chunk size of 100, and 16 threads.
Codon supports nearly all of Python's syntax, but it is not a drop-in replacement. large codebases might require modifications to be run through the codon compiler.

Andrew discusses the problem of building a new Zig language compiler. The old one was written in 60,000 lines of C and used to be faster, but now it's required to build another version from source. There are many different approaches to dealing with this problem. One big problem is that they can't commit code from source without having to deal with all the extra complexity. Another Solution is to compile the compiler directly to C code. This way, instead of using a backend like Octavius or Rust, they can use a "minimal wasm binary" as astage1, which is committed to control. This allows them to easily bootstrapping Zig into C code while still maintaining the same performance. Finally, Jacob Youngand creates an alternative implementation of the Zig-C compiler so that people can just run their own code rather than have to write a compiler themselves. This also means that they Don't have to worry about how much memory each person needs to build up. It also makes it easier for other languages to implement features that aren't yet supported in the newer version of the compiler. For instance, when a bugfix is needed, the compiler doesn't need to update the wasm1 binary because there's no more time to build itself. also, even though everyone has been working on fixing these issues, they won't be included in the final release of the new Zig language until After the next major release.
Andrew KelleyIt has shared this story a handful of times with friends of mine who are qualified, competent software engineers. each time the response was confusion about why any of this would be necessary or even remotely helpful.
The old one, written in 80,000 lines of C++, plus sharing Zig code with the new one, was faster, used less memory, and was actively maintained and enhanced.
There are many solutions to this problem, each with their own set of tradeoffs. each idea had a different set of concrete benefits as well as downsides, john sutter says. he says a bespoke backend just for bootstrapping looks different than what it does for OCaml.
The idea is to use a minimal wasm binary as astage1 kernel to build any commit from source. the interpreter is built from C source, and then translated into a stage2 binary. instead of 80,000 lines of C++, there are now 4,000 of portable C.
Zig1.wasm.zst only has the C backend enabled. zig2.c has the correct finallogic but its machine code has been optimized by the system C compiler.
The amount of memory required to build is the difference between a person with 4-8 GiB of RAM being able to contribute to Zig or not. a GitHub-provided Actions runner is also a difference.
This change is a net win, but it does represent theregression of a particular use case. it represents the ability to bootstrap Zig from only source code in a fixed number of steps. this change represents the removal of the flag, which allowed users of Zig to opt out of the new compiler and use the old one.
Cnn's john sutter has started taking Fridays to workwith Zig instead ofonZig. when this change landed in master branch, there were 650open issues with the stage1" label. to close one of these issues, one must either add test coverage for it, or identify test coverage.
Using C++ to bootstrap a new programming language credit: c++. Using a different programming language:.
This week, We're going to talk about two new standard libraries functions and their outputs. The motivation behind these new pointers is that they make it easier for C++ to communicate with other parts of the code. for example, if someone wants to change the location of a smart pointer in C++ then they have to use a wrappers like this one. But there's another reason why: "some kind of an ad-like wrapper that do this for us -- and probably even more - would probably represent intention better". So here's the details: These new pointer type are part oftheheader. They provide a nicer readable API so you can interact with CAPs. both types return pointers with similar names as they did before. They take pointser objects and destroy them at the same time. This means no doublefrees will be allowed.
This week, let's continue exploring the new world of C++23. We are going to discuss two new standard library functions and their outputs.
Many companies, and projects have had their own implementations of these abstractions. one is that you want to change the address of the pointer it is pointing to. anddoes exactly that.
Two new pointer types are part of theheader. both andreturn pointers with a similar name (suffixed with) Users can override these types to support their own smart pointers.
C++23 introduces some nice new smart pointer types that help work together with existing C APIs. these types do not come out of the blue, many companies had their own implementation.

In May 1923, Heisenberg returns to Munich to finish his doctoral studies. He has been a student at the University of Gottingen in Munich for the last two years and is finishing his dissertation. his mentor, Professor Willy Wien, suggests that he prepare his dissertation in "the traditional field of fluid Currents" because it is difficult to solve such an extremely difficult problem. He submits his dissertation on July 10th, 1923. It is accepted by the university and published in the physcist journal he edits. The only grade a candidate receives is based on their final exam and one for each subject. As Heisenberg appears before the professors, he struggles with his laboratory work and falls flat on his faces on experiments. He does not know how to use the Fabry Perot instrument as an interferometer or how to calculate the resolution of the light waves. When asked about storage batteries, the candidate is still lost. at this point, Sommerfeld invites him to join his teaching assistant, Max Born, who had already hired him as a teacher. He declines, but when his father writes to James Franck asking him to teach his son some experimentation, Franck refuses.
Physicist Werner Heisenberg received the lowest of three passing grades for his doctorate. john sutter: if he was going to survive in physics, it would be purely as a theorist.
The Swiss leaders decide that the country needs to modernize. They build a tall concrete gravity dam, called the Grande Dixence, which is about 1,000 feet high and only slightly shorter than the Empire state building. The workers pour 200 million cubic-feet of cement Every day at a speed of 2,20 tons per hour. Godard's vision of the new city spread through his films in the early years of the twentieth century. In the mid-1970s, however, it was replaced by an "horrid fascination" for the use of solidified materials. It is now used as the second most consumed substance on Earth behind only water; Thirty-three hundred tons of it each year. There are also many examples of how strong and permanent concrete can protect us from harmful elements.
Cnn's John defterios traveled to the Philippines for a tour of the world's largest concrete dam. he was inspired by the work of a man who poured concrete into the Alps in 1961. in the U.s., concrete is the second-most consumed substance on Earth behind only water. the world needs more concrete, and more of it is being recycled.
Babashka, a fast starting scripting environment built on Clojure's JVM, is described in this article. It supports a wide range of use cases, including build scripts and command lineutils, small webapps, task Runner, githooks, AWS Lambda; and everywhere you might want to use the Clojure language. In addition, it has many useful libraries and classes for running scripts. The example shows how quickly babashki can be used as a program written in Clojure. This example uses a precompiler so that any code that needs to be run through the two-step Compiling process can be easily compiled into a natively executable by GraalVM Native Image with no need for an interpreter.
This is a guest blog post by Michiel Borkent. He is the author of the guest blog, a blog called 'the lone wolf'
Babashka is a fast-starting scripting environment for Clojure. it is compiled as a standalone binary using GraalVM Native Image. we will also look at a few caveats and trade-offs.
Babashka supports a large subset of the Clojure language, but it doesn't require a JVM. it's built as a standalone binary using GraalVM Native Image. Because it has several useful built-in libraries and Java classes, it may be useful for Java developers.
The purpose of babashka is to provide a tool that can run arbitrary Clojure code. the interpreter is called smallclojure interpreter, which stands for small compiler interface. it can look up functions used in scripts; and it will not eliminate those functions.
Libraries Babashka comes with the libraries that you would expect in a scripting environment. it has HTTP client libraries (including ), a web server, templating, command line parsing, , etc. it also supports loading libraries written in babashka from Maven, Clojars, or git.
Scripts written in babashka become automatically cross-platform. GraalVM Native Image targets all the major platforms, unlike bash.
Clojure developers use an editor-connected REPL to drive the whole development process. it allows incremental construction and precise inspection of your running program.
Babashka is a language which makes concurrency easy. there is no GIL like in other scripting languages. virtual threads around the corner.
Task Runner Babashka also comes with a task runner. but you get to use Clojure instead of a bash-like DSL.
Pods can be written in Clojure but can also be implemented in other languages. Communication back and forth between babashka and the pod is performed via JSON or other serialization formats.
A lot happens in static initializers and this work cannot be delayed to runtime. this can be fixed by delaying the initialization using : (def random-number (delay (rand-int 1000))
Performance SCI is written in Clojure itself and is agnostic about GraalVM. babashka + SCI can run a combination of pre-compiled code and interpreted code. it is possible to build a custom version with a different set of libraries included.
In babashka, we don't have the ability to create new JVM types at runtime. all JVM classes have already been created ahead of time. to support this specific use case, we have an implementation of that is compiled ahead.
Clojure on Truffle could be explored, but Combining pre-compiled code and interpreted code poses its own challenges. SCI on JavaScript enabled writing a Node.js version of babashka, called nbb and a browser version called scittle.
When libraries dynamically require Clojure namespaces, the size of the executable can become larger than necessary. sometimes libraries need some light patching before they are compiled with the tool to retain the most optimal binary size.
Babashka expects the binary to be available on all major platforms. on macOS, you can compile binaries as static or dynamic executables. only static binaries work with Alpine Docker images.
GraalVM Native Image is an essential tool to make babashka a fast-starting scripting environment for Clojure. Thanks to Alex Miller, Rahul D , Daniel Higginbotham, Martin Kavalar, Anthony Caumond.
Michiel Borkent is an open source software developer who loves Clojure. He is the author of clj-kondo, babashka, SCI, nbb and other popular developer tools.

In this article, Jim explains how to retrieve the pages from teletext tape using a simple capture card. He then shows how to use a Vhs-Teletext program to decode the lines and display them in a window.
Teletext lines are recorded onto tape, but the fidelity of VHS isn't high enough. modern PCs, TV capture cards and Alistair Buxton'svhs-teletext software can recover the pages.
Vhs-teletext requires Python 3, VBI recordings, and ideally Linux. I decided to install Ubuntu 19.04 as it had the latest version of Python, supported my capture card, and worked on the computer I was intending to capture with.
I already had a capture card with a Philips SAA7134 chip, so I thought I'd try that first. all my attempts to record VBI data with this card failed. I suspect it's down to a configuration issue.
The bttv driver was attempting to autodetect the card I have, without success. it is possible to tell it which one I have with a configuration file.
Capture the VBI using this command to start recording the data. it's a good idea to capture a few seconds, then inspect the file to make sure you are actually getting something. you can inspect the recorded VBI data with the command:teletext vbiview your_file.
Teletext pages are repeated over and over again. By comparing all given instances of a particular page, a "most likely" version can be generated. a long recording can be better.
Pages from BBC's internal teletext service Telfax were occasionally broadcast within data packets alongside Ceefax. the front page of the short-lived teen magazine Sauce, and a 4-Tel preview of Babylon 5.
The instructions are still valid for the current version of vhs-teletext. you can find lots more from a wide variety of services in the Teletext Archaeologist's archive.
Ted Hoff, a graduate of the University of San Francisco, has been working on an analog to a millimeter-scale central processor at Intel. He works with Stanley Mazor and Federico Faggin to create the first commercially successful microprocessor called the Intel 4004. After his graduation, Hoff spends six years in the University as a postdoctoral researcher for neural networks. When he receives a job at Intel, he asks him where the next growth area is. Noyce tells him that he will be starting a company named Intel Corp. Hoff immediately takes up the position of manager of applications development. He makes several customers from Japan who want a low cost calculator but do not have enough money to buy one. They send three engineers to help them develop the chip, but Hoff convinces them to work on it Instead. Then Faggin helps design the 8008, which is a compact, 8-bit, high-end machine. Huff never considers patenting the new technology, although he has already patented several ideas. One day, when he is about to leave, Atari hires him as its vice president of business technology. While at Atari, Mr. Tramiel sells Atari out to Jack Tramiel, who allows Hoff to become a partner in the company. Though he enjoys being independent, despite his busy schedule, resents having to cut back half his group. His biggest contribution to this project was ensuring that the emerging note would sound in tune or at least harmonyally compliment the tune. Although he does not get credit for these inventions, if they are published, hundreds of people find fault with them.
'Ted' Hoff was a research manager at the then-Intel company. he created the first commercial microprocessor, the 'Intel 4004' in 1968. "we got computers away from those[computer center]people," he says.
In 1970, an independent inventor filed for a patent on a processor and said it was to be made on one chip. in 1990, after numerous appeals and extensions, Gilbert Hyatt was granted that patent. the legal rights to the microprocessor belong to Hoff, Mazor, and Faggin.
The inventing of the microprocessor has proved to be his most celebrated achievement. he now spends half his time as a consultant and half pursuing technical projects. his main technical interests are energy, water, and climate change.
White explains how he has broken the feature that he relies on when he runs his dos-based programs in both windows and W2K. He says that it is broken because of the fact that "Alt Enter" should be toggled between full screen and "windowed mode" when a particular program is running inside the emulator. This works independent of whether or not the program is displaying either text or graphic. He also mentions that some third party screen capture applications don't work with Dos without using Alt-Printer to copy the images to the clip board. Richard Brown writes about this problem: "I doubt they were interested in lives -- only in making greater money -- and screwingup as many competing system as possible." The problem? When a program runs in the emulator, it will freeze the graphics but you can use an alternative method to copy them to the clipboard.
Cnn's john defterios says he's not sure why he needs a DOS graphic capture. he says it's because he doesn't have a floppy drive that can be used to capture a graphics file. the u.s. government hasn't released a fix for the problem, he writes. do you have any suggestions on how to fix this?
